Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh meningkatnya peran media film sebagai medium representasi sekaligus konstruksi ideologis atas isu-isu keagamaan kontemporer, khususnya terkait radikalisme teologis. Film Bidaah karya Erma Fatima menghadirkan praktik keagamaan yang menyimpang melalui simbol visual dan narasi yang kuat, sehingga berpotensi membentuk serta memengaruhi persepsi masyarakat terhadap otoritas dan kebenaran religius. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana radikalisme teologis direpresentasikan dalam film tersebut melalui sistem tanda dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa observasi mendalam terhadap adegan, dialog, simbol visual, serta struktur naratif film, didukung oleh kajian literatur yang relevan. Analisis dilakukan melalui tiga level pemaknaan Barthes, yaitu denotasi, konotasi, dan mitos, guna mengungkap makna tersurat, tersirat, serta ideologi yang bekerja di balik representasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa radikalisme teologis direpresentasikan melalui simbol-simbol keagamaan seperti busana religius, ritual ibadah, dan figur pemimpin karismatik yang dikonstruksi sebagai otoritas absolut. Pada tataran konotatif dan mitologis, representasi tersebut membangun legitimasi kekuasaan yang bersifat dogmatis, eksklusif, dan anti-kritik, sehingga menormalisasi praktik penyimpangan sebagai kebenaran religius. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa film tidak hanya merefleksikan realitas sosial, tetapi juga berperan aktif dalam memproduksi dan mereproduksi ideologi keagamaan melalui sistem representasi simbolik. ***** This study is motivated by the increasing role of film as a medium of representation as well as an ideological construction of contemporary religious issues, particularly theological radicalism. The film Bidaah, directed by Erma Fatima, portrays deviant religious practices through powerful visual symbols and narratives, which have the potential to shape and influence public perceptions of authority and religious truth. This study aims to examine how theological radicalism is represented in the film through a system of signs using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through in-depth observation of scenes, dialogues, visual symbols, and the narrative structure of the film, supported by relevant literature. The analysis is conducted through Barthes’ three levels of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth, in order to reveal explicit and implicit meanings as well as the underlying ideology within the representation. The findings indicate that theological radicalism is represented through religious symbols such as religious attire, ritual practices, and charismatic leader figures constructed as absolute authorities. At the connotative and mythological levels, these representations build a form of power legitimation that is dogmatic, exclusive, and resistant to criticism, thereby normalizing deviant practices as religious truth. This study confirms that film not only reflects social reality but also actively participates in producing and reproducing religious ideology through systems of symbolic representation.
