Abstract
**** The increasing prevalence of mental health problems, such as loneliness, anxiety, and depression, demonstrates the importance of emotional support in human life. In the context of interpersonal communication, emotional support plays a crucial role in helping individuals cope with stress and recover from psychological distress. However, studies on emotional support still focus largely on real life, while its representation in literary works has not been widely explored, even though literature is also a communication medium that contains emotional and social values. This study aims to analyze the representation of emotional support in Satoshi Yagisawa's novel "Days at the Morisaki Bookshop" using a narrative analysis approach using Freytag's Pyramid model. This study uses the concepts of interpersonal communication, emotional support, and Freytag's Pyramid narrative analysis as theoretical foundations. Interpersonal communication is used to understand interactions between characters, while the concept of emotional support is used to identify forms of emotional support such as empathy, attention, acceptance, and appreciation. Furthermore, Freytag's Pyramid model is used to analyze the structure of the novel's plot through the stages of exposition, complication, climax, conflict reduction, and resolution. This study uses a qualitative approach with narrative analysis methods. Data were obtained from the novel's text, which was analyzed based on the five stages of Freytag's Pyramid narrative structure. The focus of this study was to identify forms of emotional support, such as empathy, caring, acceptance, and appreciation, in the interactions between the main character, Takako, and other characters. The results showed that emotional support is represented gradually in the narrative structure and plays a significant role in the emotional development of the main character, Takako. During the exposition and complication stages, Takako experiences emotional distress due to a failed relationship. At the climax stage, interactions with other characters, particularly her uncle, begin to provide significant emotional support. Furthermore, during the escalating conflict and resolution stages, this support fosters recovery, self-acceptance, and a shift in attitude toward openness and optimism. This study shows that emotional support in Days at the Morisaki Bookshop is represented through presence, empathy, and acceptance, which help the main character experience emotional change from despair to self-acceptance and emotional independence. This emotional development aligns with the plot stages in Freytag's Pyramid, thus reinforcing the narrative structure of the character's transformation.
