Abstract
Análisis kritis menunjukan bahwa selain menciptakan keunggulan, keterlekatan ekonomi berpotensi menimbulkan over embeddedness. ***** This study is motivated by the phenomenon of economic practices in which trading activities remain strongly embedded in the ethnic cultural backgrounds of economic actor. This study aims to examine how the economic space in the Condet area, East Jakarta, represent the characteristics of Arabian parfume as a commodity of Arab merchants, to explore how cultural identity is embedded in the buying and selling practices of Arab parfume, and to analyze the concept of embeddedness in the trading practices of Arab parfume merchants in Condet, East Jakarta. The analysis employs Mark Granovetter’s Embeddedness Theory while also considering the perspective of ethno-economics. This research adopts a mixed methods approach, with a greater emphasis on qualitative methods and a case study design. The study was conducted at three Arab parfume store located in Condet, East Jakarta. The research involved eight informants, consisting of a community leader (Habib), store owners, employees, and customers of Arabian parfume. Data were collected through in-depth interview, documentation, and a Google Forms survey administered to 35 customers of Arabian parfume in the Condet area as respondent. The finding reveal that the characteristics of Arab parfume merchants in Condet are reflected in the distinctive fragrance of Arab parfume, the design of parfume stores, and the use of Arabic symbols and script across various media and products. The study also find that cultural embeddedness in buying and selling practices is manifested through kinship networks and trust, strong religiousity, the reputation of Arab parfume merchant community, and the economic adaptation strategies to sustain business continuity. This embeddedness is reflected in bonding social capital, strong and weak ties, trust, and norms that have developed within the Arab community. The critical analysis further demonstrates that, while economic embeddedness creates competitive advantages, it also has the potential to generate over-embeddedness.
