Abstract
This study aims to describe the forms of haji (shame) expressions represented in the film Kokuhaku (2010) and the meanings of those representations based on Stuart Hall's theory of representation. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method, using dialogues, nonverbal expressions, and visual elements (mise-en-scène) in the film Kokuhaku (2010) as the data source. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed through the processes of encoding and decoding within the dominant-hegemonic reading position. Takie Sugiyama Lebra's concept of haji and Takeo Doi's concept of amae were used to interpret the representations into four categories: loss of face, failure to belong to the group (amae), social control mechanism, and aesthetics and public self-image. The findings reveal 19 data representing haji expressions in the film Kokuhaku (2010). These representations are constructed through verbal, nonverbal, and visual aspects. Verbally, haji is represented through insults, accusations, labeling, moral judgment, negative evaluation, disclosure of private matters, defense, and denial. Nonverbally, haji is represented through behaviors such as lowering the head, avoiding eye contact, remaining silent, withdrawing, crying, covering the face, defensive responses, and emotional outbursts. In terms of meaning, loss of face was the most dominant category (14 data), followed by failure to belong to the group (amae) and aesthetics and public self-image (2 data each), while social control mechanism appeared in only one datum. These findings indicate that Kokuhaku primarily represents haji as an experience of losing honor when a character's weakness or personal identity is exposed to others.
