Abstract
***** This study aims to develop alternative fashion design references that are adaptable to campus norms and to describe the perceptions and evaluations of fashion lecturers, fashion designers, and alternative fashion users toward the resulting design references. The study was motivated by the phenomenon of alternative fashion among students at Jakarta State University, including Y2K, Decora-Kei, Grunge, Emo, Goth, Berkain, Bohemian, and Mori-Kei styles, which require adaptation to the norms and dress ethics of the academic environment. This study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The design process was based on four theoretical foundations: the Fashion Trend Forecast RECODE 2026/2027, the elements and principles of fashion design, the characteristics of students' campus attire, and the characteristics of alternative fashion. Data were collected through interviews with one fashion lecturer, two fashion designers, and one alternative fashion user in a formal setting, and were analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman. The main findings consist of descriptions and interpretations of the informants’ perceptions regarding the design references. The evaluation results indicated generally positive acceptance from all informants. Three indicators achieved unanimous agreement: modesty and neatness, differentiation from mainstream fashion, and the implementation of thrifting and upcycling practices. Meanwhile, the indicators of outfit completeness and appropriateness of appearance revealed differing perspectives among lecturers, designers, and users, reflecting that the suitability of the designs to campus norms is the result of a negotiation between institutional expectations, stylistic authenticity, and the wearer’s personal comfort.
