Abstract

This study aims to (1) examine the forms of request speech acts and request strategies and (2) examine the forms of response to request utterances in the film Bullet Train Explosion. The forms of request speech acts were analysed based on Okamoto’s (1992) classification of request utterances. Request strategies were analysed based on the theory of Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1984). Furthermore, response forms were analysed based on Li (2004) and the classification of positive and nega tive responses by Harvey and Smith (1977). This study employed a qualitative descriptive method, utilising 27 data from the film Bullet Train Explosion. This study found the use of the mood derivable strategy with imperative sentences (4 data) and polite imperative sentences (8 data), the references to preparatory conditions strategy with affirmative interrogative sentences (3 data) and negative interrogative sentences (2 data), the suggestory formulae strategy (1 data), strong hints strategy using declarative sentences (4 data), and interrogative sentences (1 data). The mood derivable strategy with polite imperative sentences is the most positive response with acceptance form (5 data). Meanwhile, negative response with refusal form more frequently found in references to preparatory conditions strategy (4 data), suggestory formulae strategy (1 data) and strong hints strategy (2 data). These findings are associated with the predominant contextual in film Bullet Train Explosion, which portray urgent situations, leading speakers to formulate requests that are expected to be understood immediately and responded. Furthermore, these findings of this study reaffirm that the choice of request strategies in determined by the situation, context, and social relationship between the speaker and the addressee.
