Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effect of parent attachment, consisting of mother attachment and father attachment, on emotional dependency in romantic relationships among emerging adults. This research employed a quantitative non-experimental approach with a causal correlational design. The participants consisted of 146 emerging adults aged 18–25 years who resided in Jabodetabek, had been involved in a romantic relationship for at least six months, and were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment-Revised (IPPA-R) to measure mother attachment and father attachment, and the Partner's Emotional Dependency Scale (SED) to assess emotional dependency. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. The findings revealed that parent attachment simultaneously had a significant effect on emotional dependency in romantic relationships (p = 0.040; R² = 0.044). Partially, mother attachment had a significant negative effect on emotional dependency (B = -0.181; β = -0.207; p = 0.026), whereas father attachment did not have a significant effect (B = -0.004; β = -0.007; p = 0.940). These findings indicate that better attachment quality with mothers is associated with lower emotional dependency on romantic partners, while attachment quality with fathers does not significantly predict emotional dependency among emerging adults.
