Abstract
**** The film Kibou No Kuni (希望の国) by Sion Sono was inspired by the 2011 Fukushima earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster, which brought about various ecological and social impacts on Japanese society. The film portrays the relationship between humans and their environment in the aftermath of disaster through the lives of two families residing near a radiation-affected area. This study aims to analyze the relationship between narrative space and characters, as well as the ecological critique represented in Kibou No Kuni, through a literary ecocriticism approach. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method, using observation and note-taking techniques applied to dialogue, scenes, and mise en scène elements within the film. The analysis is conducted in two stages: first, using Himawan Pratista's concept of narrative space to examine the relationship between setting and characters; second, using Greg Garrard's six ecocritical concepts Pollution, wilderness, apocalypse, Dwelling, animals, and earth to examine the ecological critique constructed by the film. The findings show that space in the film functions not merely as a backdrop, but actively shapes and is shaped by the characters' psychological states and decisions in the aftermath of the disaster. Of the twenty-seven data points identified, nuclear radiation is most frequently represented as a form of Pollution affecting humans, the environment, and social life, followed by representations of apocalypse, earth, Dwelling, and animals, all of which reveal the breakdown of the human-environment relationship caused by the nuclear disaster. Another significant finding is the complete absence of any representation of wilderness, indicating that radiation has permeated even the spaces once considered safe from human influence, leaving no pure space left for the characters to retreat to. Thus, Kibou No Kuni constructs an ecological critique of the risks of nuclear technology while affirming the importance of a harmonious relationship between humans and their environment. Keywords: Kibou No Kuni, literary ecocriticism, narrative space, ecological critique, Greg Garrard, Fukushima.
