Abstract
***** The perception of an inclusive school climate refers to pupils’ views of a school environment that supports diversity, provides a sense of security, and encourages the participation of all pupils without discrimination. It is hypothesised that this perception plays a role in shaping friendship qualities, namely the quality of friendships formed between mainstream pupils and pupils with special educational needs (PWSEN). This study aims to investigate the perception of the inclusive climate at school in relation to the friendship qualities between mainstream pupils and pupils with special educational needs in an inclusive school. This is a quantitative study involving 326 mainstream pupils in an inclusive school, selected using purposive sampling. This study utilised the Inclusive Climate Scale (ICS), developed by Schwab, Sharma and Loreman, to measure perceptions of the school’s inclusive climate, and the Friendship Qualities Scale (FQS), developed by Bukowski, Hoza and Boivin, to measure friendship qualities. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results indicate a significant relationship between perceptions of the inclusive climate at school and the friendship qualities of mainstream pupils towards pupils with special educational needs. Perceptions of the inclusive climate at school account for 15.9 per cent of the variation in friendship qualities, whilst the remaining 84.1 per cent is explained by other factors not examined in this study.
