Abstract

*****Identitas budaya Papua kerap dipahami melalui representasinya di panggung negara sehingga menciptakan jarak dengan pengalaman hidup masyarakatnya, sementara kajian negosiasi identitas budaya Papua masih didominasi pendekatan sosiologis dan komunikasi. Berangkat dari pengalaman perupa berlatar belakang budaya Sunda yang pernah merepresentasikan Papua dalam misi budaya di Vanuatu, Australia, dan Korea, penelitian ini menciptakan karya seni performans "Mengunyah Identitas" untuk membaca negosiasi identitas melalui pengalaman tubuh. Negosiasi identitas dipahami sebagai proses dinamis yang terus bergerak sesuai konteks sosial dan budaya, sejalan dengan pemikiran Stuart Hall bahwa identitas merupakan pemosisian yang terus dibentuk melalui relasi dan representasi. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan practice led research dengan tubuh perupa sebagai instrumen kunci, dihadirkan melalui praktik menginang khas wilayah adat La Pago selama tiga jam di ruang publik Taman Literasi Blok M, Jakarta Selatan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan negosiasi identitas berkembang melalui tiga tahapan yaitu konsep, karakteristik visual, serta pengolahan unsur dan teknik, bergerak dari pendekatan berbasis wacana menuju pengalaman tubuh yang dihayati langsung bersama masyarakat. Variasi respons partisipan, dari penerimaan hingga penolakan yang sopan, menegaskan bahwa tubuh perupa non-Papua dapat menjadi ruang refleksi yang sah untuk memahami identitas budaya sebagai sesuatu yang relasional dan tidak pernah selesai dibentuk. Kata Kunci: negosiasi identitas, budaya Papua, seni performans *****Papuan cultural identity is often understood through its representation on the national stage, creating a distance from the lived experience of the Papuan people, while studies on this negotiation remain dominated by sociological and communication approaches. Drawing from the artist's own experience representing Papuan culture during cultural missions to Vanuatu, Australia, and Korea despite her Sundanese background, this research created the performance artwork "Mengunyah Identitas" to read identity negotiation through bodily experience. Identity negotiation is understood as a dynamic process shaped by social and cultural context, in line with Stuart Hall's view that identity is a positioning continually formed through relations and representation. This research employs an Practice-Led Research approach with the artist's body as the key instrument, presented through the durational betel nut chewing practice of the La Pago customary region over three hours in the public space of Taman Literasi Blok M, South Jakarta. The findings show that identity negotiation developed through three stages, namely concept, visual characteristics, and the processing of elements and techniques, shifting from a discourse based approach toward a directly lived bodily experience shared with the public. The varied participant responses, from acceptance to polite refusal, affirm that a non Papuan artist's body can serve as a legitimate reflective space for understanding cultural identity as relational and perpetually in the process of formation.
