Abstract

Kata Kunci: identitas sosial, Richard Jenkins, komunitas streetball, budaya hip-hop, ruang publik, brotherhood.***** This study aims to analyze the process of social identity formation among members of the We Are Stars Streetball Community in Depok, West Java, through the internalization of hip- hop culture within streetball activities conducted in public spaces. The study is based on the phenomenon of streetball as not merely a sporting activity but also a social arena where collective identities are constructed and expressed. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature review. The data were analyzed using Richard Jenkins' Social Identity Theory, which views identity as a continuous process of identification shaped through social interaction. The findings reveal that the social identity of We Are Stars community members is constructed through sustained interaction within the community, resulting in a collective identity as hip-hop streetballers. Hip-hop culture is internalized through members’ styles of dress, musical preferences, communication patterns, and streetball playing styles as symbolic expressions of group identity. Furthermore, community members demonstrate role distance by displaying competitive and expressive behavior during games while maintaining respectful and modest conduct in their everyday social lives. The Bank Dagang Negara (BDN) Basketball Court in Depok and the community’s regular jamming sessions function as public spaces where this identity is performed, negotiated, and socially recognized. This collective identity is further reinforced through a strong sense of brotherhood, mutual social support, and shared experiences that sustain the community as a representation of hip-hop streetball culture in Depok. Keywords: social identity, Richard Jenkins, streetball community, hip-hop culture, public space, brotherhood.
