Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of verbal and visual representations present in student-made videos, recognize the cognitive processes involved in their production, and analyze how those cognitive processes carry out learning that represents students' comprehension. This study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology with multimodal analysis as the research design. The theoretical framework was Mayer's (2005) Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML), which identifies three essential cognitive processes for meaningful learning: selecting, organizing, and integrating. The data consisted of 20 videos created by undergraduate English Language Education students at the State University of Jakarta. The videos were produced as a phoneme pronunciation assignment and were analyzed by identifying the five forms of knowledge representation and mapping them onto the three cognitive processes. The findings revealed that all five forms of representation were present across the 20 videos, though with considerable variation in depth, particularly in pictorial models and prior knowledge. The selecting and organizing processes were identified in all 20 videos, demonstrating that every student engaged in deliberate content selection and structural organization. The integrating process – the hallmark of meaningful learning in CTML – was explicitly evidenced in only very few numbers of the videos. The findings further indicated that students with richer prior knowledge – encompassing phoneme charts, phoneme type definitions, and articulatory concepts – were more likely to produce videos demonstrating integrated comprehension.
