Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali pertentangan yang terjadi antara orang timur dan barat di dunia modern karena setting film ada di tahun 2005. Penelitian ini menggunkan metode descriptive analysis untuk menggambarkan bagaimana film Birde and Prejudice menunjukan masalah orientalisme dan mimicry di dunia modern dengan mengunakan theory Edaward Said dan Homi Bhabha.. Bride and Prejudice adalah sebuah film adaptasi dari novel Pride and Prejudice yang mengangkat tema post-colonial: Orientalisme dan Mimicry. Orientalisme adalah teori yang membahas cara pandang barat terhadap dunia timur secara social, politik, dan ideology. Sementara mimicry adalah teori yang membahas tentang usaha orang timur untuk meniru barat dan diterima menjadi bagian dalam masyarakat barat. Kedua tema ini ada dalam film Bride and Prejudice tetapi melaui karakter yang berbeda. Orientalisme muncul dalam interaksi antara Will Darcy seorang pemuda amerika dan Lalita, gadis pribumi india yang cantik. Ternyata, dalam film ini orang barat yang diwakili oleh William Darcy menunjukan gejala orientalisme melalui kekayaan dan kecerdasanya dalam berbisnis. Sementara mimicry muncul dalam karakter Kholi dan Kiran yang sudah tinggal lama di barat dan sudah mengadopsi nilai-nilai barat dalam kehidupan mereka. Kedua orang ini berusaha menunjukan kalau mereka jauh lebih baik dibandingkan dengan orang pribumi India. Bahkan, mereka pun tidak ragu untuk mencemooh negeri mereka sendiri dan menyatakan kalau mereka berbeda dengan orang pribumi India. Akan tetapi sekuat apapun mereka berusaha untuk meniru barat, mereka tetap tidak di terima oleh masyarakat barat. ***** This research is aimed to find out the issue of Orientalism and Mimicry and to dig the conflict, which occur between the western and the eastern in modern period because the setting of the movie is situated in 2005. This research uses a descriptive analytical method to explain how the movie shows the issue of orientalism and mimicry in modern time by using Edward Said's theory of orientalism and Homi Bhabha's mimicry. Bride and Prejudice is an adaptation movie of Jane Austen novel's Pride and Prejudice, which brought the theme of post-colonialism: Orientalism and Mimicry. Orientalism is a theory, which talks about western view over the orient socially, politically and ideologically, while Mimicry is a theory, which describes the effort of the eastern to imitate the west and to be accepted among the western society. Both of these themes are arise in Bride and Prejudice but trough the different characters. The result of the study showed that Orientalism emerges through the interaction between William Darcy, a rich American male and Lalita, a beautiful Indian female. Indeed, in this movie the western which represented by William Darcy, shows the orientalism through his wealthy and intelligence in business. Whereas, the concept of mimicry arises in the characters of Mr. Kholi and Kiran who had been living in the western country for years and adopted the value of the western culture in their life. Both of these people try to show to the native that they are much better from them. Hence, they have no hesitation to mock their own motherland and they alleged that they are different from the native Indian. However, no matter how hard they try to imitate the west but still they are unaccepted by the western society.
