Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan signfikansi layout/ tata letak sampul depan sebuah novel dengan tema novel tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisa interpretasi dengan menngunakan teori Semiotik Peirce untuk membahas tanda – tanda pada sampul dan menunjukkan peran tanda dalam memberikan hubungan antara tanda dengan tema novel tersebut dengan menghubungan tanda dengan narasi pada novel Pada ke tiga novel Paulo Coelho yang dipakai sebagai data, penulis menemukan bahwa layout/ tata letak sampul depan memiliki peran penting dalam memberikan deskripsi tema novel. Tata letak sampul depan mamberikan penggambaran tidak langsung pada tema cerita sebuah novel. Penggambaran ini tidak tergantung pada jumlah tanda yang ada pada tata letak sampul depan. Dengan mengunakan teori semiotik Peirce, pada ketiga sampul depan Coelho ditemukan bahwa kebanyakan tanda yang muncul pada tata letak sampul depan novel – novel tersebut adalah simbol. Kedua jenis tanda juga muncul meski tidak sebanyak simbol. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa gabungan ketiga jenis tanda yang ada pada tata letak sampul depan novel Coelho memunculkan beberapa kemungkinan pemaparan mengenai tema novel yang bersangkutan. ***** This study aims to show the significance of the novels cover layout in delivering its theme. The study is an interpretative analysis by using Peirce’s semiotic theory about signs. To show the significance of the novel cover layout in conveying its (the novel) theme, the writer interprets the signs on the cover layout and finds its relation with the story by looking to the narration in the novel. On the three cover layouts of Paulo Coelho’s novel analyzed as the data, the writer found that the cover layout have a big contribution in delivering the theme description either they have a great number of signs or less signs. The layout of each novel gives an implicit description about the theme of the story. The theme description does not depend on the quantity of the signs that appears in the cover layout. Using Peirce’s semiotic study, the most used signs appear in the three Coelho’s cover layouts are symbol. The other two types of signs also appear even that is not as much as symbol. Yet, in the end of the research found that the combination three types of signs appears in the cover layout of Coelho’s novels indeed gave an idea about the theme. However, the theme descriptions could provide other alternative interpretation about the theme.
