Abstract
This study aims to describe the phenomenon of faith development experienced by Karman, a character from Ahmad Tohari’s Kubah novel. This research was conducted from November 2019 to August 2020. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with psychological literary approach. The context analysis was done by using James W. Fowler’s faith development theory to see how Karman’s faith was developed in Ahmad Tohari’s Kubah novel. The result from the analysis of faith development showed that Karman had up and down dynamics on his faith. According to James W. Fowler’s stages classification of faith development, Karman had faith development stage 2 of mythic-literal on his childhood, then faith development stage 3 of synthetic-conventional on his adolescence, early adulthood, and marriage, then dropped down to stage 2 of mythic-literal on his late adulthood during imprisonment, gradually went up to stage 3 of synthetic-conventional when he was back to Pegaten. Karman’s up and down dynamic faith showed the main character’s psychological shock after the arresting tragedy for Indonesian Communist Party members in 1965. Therefore, it can be said that this Kubah novel is a work that has an implicit message to show the psychological conditions from arresting victims in 1965 that had not gotten any proper justice.
