Abstract
******************* This qualitative study was aimed at investigating the occurrence of Conversational Implicature as part of what the speakers implied in an Extensive Listening of BBC Learning English Podcast by identifying the way the speakers generate implicature, the types of implicature employed, and the function which carried by each implicature. The researcher utilized Grice’s theory of Cooperative Principle (CP) and Conversational Implicature (CI) and revealed that of 200 samples, the implicature occurred in 104 utterances which mostly generated by flouting the maxim of cooperativity rather than violation. As for the type of conversational implicature, two types of conversational implicature were identified, those are Generalized Conversational Implicature (GCI) and Particularized Conversational Implicature (PCI) where PCI dominates the conversation. Lastly, the researcher utilized Searle’s Speech Act theory to determine the function carried in each implicature, those are Assertive (Representative), Commissive, Declarative, Directive, and Expressive, however, Declarative function was absent during the analysis. Keywords: conversational implicature, cooperative principle, extensive listening, BBC Learning English Podcast
