Abstract

Studi ini menyelidiki kekuatan hegemoni kelas yang berkuasa dalam novel The Handmaid’s Tale karya Margaret Atwood. Studi ini menggunakan deskriptif analitis interpretatif sebagai model penelitian. Data yang digunakan dalam studi ini berupa kata, frasa, dan kalimat di dalam novel The Handmaid’s Tale yang menunjukan adanya kekuatan hegemoni. Dengan menggunakan teori Antonio Gramsci yaitu Hegemoni, ditunjukkan bahwa kelas yang berkuasa menggunakan persetujuan dan kekerasan dengan tujuan mempertahankan kekuasaannya. Berdasarkan narasi dan dialog di dalam novel, terlihat bahwa strategi utama yang digunakan oleh kelas yang berkuasa untuk mempertahankan hegemoninya adalah dengan memanipulasi massa melalui agen yang dimilikinya. Dalam hal ini, agen yang paling berpengaruh dalam memanipulasi kelas yang dikuasai adalah Aunt Lydia. Sebagai agen dari kelas yang berkuasa, Aunt Lydia mendoktrin Handmaids dengan memasukkan nilai-nilai yang dimiliki oleh kelas yang dominan ke dalam setiap ucapannya untuk memperoleh persetujuan Handmaids. Selain itu, Commander dan istrinya, yang merupakan bagian dari kelas yang berkuasa, juga secara langsung memanipulasi kelas yang dikuasai melalui ucapan mereka. Lebih lanjut, strategi lain yang digunakan oleh kelas yang berkuasa atau agennya dalam memanipulasi kelas yang dikuasai juga diimplementasikan melalui penggunaan Bible, hak istimewa, penghargaan, media massa, film, lagu, bahasa pemersatu, dan pakaian yang memiliki makna simbolis. Adanya kekerasan di dalam novel juga tergambar dengan jelas pada saat The Salvagings; pengeksekusian orang-orang yang dianggap bersalah. Selain itu, di Red Centre, di mana Handmaids dilatih oleh para Aunt sebelum ditempatkan di rumah Commander, juga terdapat adanya kekerasan. This study intends to investigate the hegemonic power of the ruling class in The Handmaid’s Tale novel by Margaret Atwood. It uses descriptive analytical interpretative as its research design. The data of this study are the words, phrases, and sentences in The Handmaid's Tale novel which reflect the hegemonic power. By using Antonio Gramsci’s theory of Hegemony, it shows that the ruling class uses both consent and coercion in order to maintain its power. From the narrations and dialogues in the novel, it can be noted that the prominent strategy used by the ruling class in order to maintain its hegemony is by manipulating the masses through its agents. In this sense, the most prominent agent whose role is to manipulate the subaltern class is Aunt Lydia. As the ruling class’ agent, Aunt Lydia indoctrinates the Handmaids by inserting the dominant values in its own discourse in order to win the consent of the Handmaids. Additionally, the Commander and his wife, who are the members of Gilead’s ruling class, also directly manipulate the subaltern class through its own discourse. Moreover, other strategies used by the ruling class or its agents in manipulating the subaltern class also include making use of Bible, privileges, rewards, mass media, movies, songs, unified language, and symbolic outfit. The use of violence in the novel is clearly portrayed during the Salvagings; the execution of those who are declared as guilty. In addition, at the Red Centre, in which the Handmaids are trained by the Aunts before being transferred to the Commanders’ houses, there’s also the occurrence of coercion.
