Abstract
********* This study aims to see how gender inequality is portrayed in Saumya Dave’s WellBehaved Indian Women. Using Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism and Giddens’ selfidentity, this study applied the descriptive-analytical method to analyze Gender Inequality experienced by Nandini and Simran and its relation with their self-identity. The finding showed that gender inequality experienced by Nandini and Simran was caused by the social construction and traditional values which had been embedded in their family and passed by their mother from generation to generation. As a form of gender inequality, Nandini and Simran were treated differently from their partner both in the domestic and public sphere. They did not have the opportunity to follow their desire, had to obey their partners, and their positions were always below men. These problems caused them to be the other while their partners were the self. Because of this inequality, Nandini and Simran could not be free to determine their identity and often felt they would lose themselves. In the end, with the help of people outside their family, Nandini and Simran finally could overcome the inequality and refused their otherness because they gained the opportunity to choose what they had always wanted, and they were eventually certain with themselves.
