Abstract

As technology advanced, new digital learning tools and materials, such as the digital mind map, began to emerge. Previous research on the use of digital mind maps was only examined at the university level, therefore this study investigates Junior High School students' and teachers' perceptions of digital mind maps in learning English subjects. This research employs the mixed method using descriptive analysis. The data was collected using two instruments, a questionnaire and an interview. The respondents of this study are one hundred students Junior High School students and ten English subject teachers from grade 7 to grade 9. This research provides a profile of Junior High School students and teachers adapted and modified from the Sabbah (2015) and Lin & Faste (2012) models, which contain one major section; the use of digital mind maps in English subject. This section has three primary aspects which is used as the theme of the research questions: (a) speed and efficiency, (b) appearance and mechanics, and (c) ontology and concept mapping. The findings reveal that both students and teachers have positive perceptions regarding the use of digital mind maps in English subjects. The digital mind map is useful for English teaching since it can be used for a variety of subjects, makes the lesson more accessible to students, improves students' knowledge, and is efficient to use. Therefore, the researcher recommends that English teachers begin applying digital mind maps on English classes. ABSTRAK Seiring kemajuan teknologi, alat dan materi pembelajaran digital baru, seperti peta pikiran digital, mulai bermunculan. Penelitian sebelumnya tentang penggunaan peta pikiran digital hanya diteliti di tingkat universitas, oleh karena itu penelitian ini menyelidiki persepsi siswa SMP dan guru tentang peta pikiran digital dalam pembelajaran mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran dengan menggunakan analisis deskriptif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan dua instrumen yaitu kuesioner dan wawancara. Responden penelitian ini adalah seratus siswa siswa SMP dan sepuluh guru mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris dari kelas 7 sampai kelas 9. Penelitian ini memberikan profil siswa dan guru SMP yang diadaptasi dan dimodifikasi dari Sabbah (2015) dan Lin & Faste (2012) model, yang berisi satu bagian utama; penggunaan peta pikiran digital dalam mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Bagian ini memiliki tiga aspek utama yang dijadikan sebagai tema pertanyaan penelitian: (a) kecepatan dan efisiensi, (b) tampilan dan mekanik, dan (c) ontologi dan pemetaan konsep. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa siswa dan guru memiliki persepsi positif mengenai penggunaan peta pikiran digital dalam mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Peta pikiran digital berguna untuk pengajaran bahasa Inggris karena dapat digunakan untuk berbagai mata pelajaran, membuat pelajaran lebih mudah diakses oleh siswa, meningkatkan pengetahuan siswa, dan efisien untuk digunakan. Oleh karena itu, peneliti merekomendasikan agar guru bahasa Inggris mulai menerapkan peta pikiran digital di kelas bahasa Inggris.
