Abstract

Studi ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu dan menganalisis kesalahan penggunaan verbs yang dibuat oleh mahasiswa di kelas Grammar, dengan menggunakan Error Analysis sebagai alat ukur pada penggunaan verbs yang terdapat pada essay mereka. Sumber data yang dikumpulkan adalah 41 karangan mahasiswa yang diambil dari angkatan yang berbeda, 2014 dan 2012 namun pada kelas yang sama, yaitu kelas Grammar. Data yang diperoleh dianalisa menggunakan model error analysis dari Corder (1967) dengan empat tipe error: addition, omission, selection, dan ordering. Selain itu, studi ini juga menjabarkan persentase frekuensi kesalahan yang terbagi dari empat tipe error diatas berdasarkan Mahsun (2007). Studi ini juga menjabarkan penyebab yang ada dibalik empat kesalahan-kesalahan diatas tersebut menggunakan teori Richards (1971), yaitu intralingual error dan interlingual error. Temuan yang didapat menunjukkan, hanya ada 3 tipe error: addition, omission, dan selection. Error pada selection menempati posisi teratas dengan jumlah 107 error (79%), diikuti dengan error pada omission dengan jumlah 15 error (11%), dan addition dengan jumlah 13 error (10%). Penyebab error didominasi oleh intralingual error dengan jumlah 125 error (92%), sedangkan interlingual error hanya sejumlah 10 (8%). Studi ini diharapkan dapat menjadi referensi bagi mahasiswa Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris UNJ, terutama pada partisipan yang ikut serta pada studi ini dan mahasiswa lain pada umumnya. This study aims to profile the students’ errors in using verbs made by students in Grammar class. Error Analysis is used in the study as a tool in analyzing the errors on the use of verbs contained in their writings. The data sources are 41 students’ writings taken from different levels, students’ year 2014 and 2012 but in the same class, that is Grammar class. The data obtained were analyzed using Corder’s (1967) four types of error: addition, omission, selection, and misordering. This study also provides the frequency of errors by Mahsun (2007) shown in percentages which are divided based on the four types of error above. The study also outlines the possible causes behind four errors based on the theory of Richards (1971), i.e. interlingual and intralingual error. The findings show that there are only three types of error found: addition, omission, and selection. Error in the selection is on the top of the list by the number of 107 errors (79%), followed by omission errors by the number of 15 errors (11%), and the addition by the number of error 13 (10%). In conclusion, the cause of the error is dominated by intralingual error with 125 errors (92%), while interlingual errors are only 10 (8%). This study is expected as a reference for students of English Language and Literature of State University of Jakarta, especially in those who participated in this study and other students in general.
