Abstract

Belajar mandiri adalah kemampuan siswa untuk dapat bertanggung jawab terhadap apa yang sedang ia pelajari. Penelitian ini telah dilakukan untuk mencari tahu tingkat kemandirian mahasiswa English Department di Universitas Negeri Jakarta dalam praktik belajar di kelas Public Speaking. Penelitian ini menggunakan survey karena peneliti mendapatkan datanya dari samples untuk mengidentifikasi pendapat, kebiasaan, dan pengetahuan mahasiswa yang berhubungan dengan belajar mandiri dilengkapi dengan hasil statistic. Datanya diperoleh melalui kuesioner, interview, dan observasi untuk mendukung data dari kuesioner. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada 14 karakteristik dari belajar mandiri di kelas Public Speaking. Dari 45 responden yang telah mengisi angket, ada 44,5% mahasiswa yang memiliki tingkat kemandirian belajar tinggi di kelas Public Speaking, 55,6% memiliki tingkat kemandirian sedang, dan tidak ditemukan adanya mahasiswa yang memiliki tingkat kemandirian rendah atau sebanyak 0%. Disamping itu, telah diketahui juga bahwa belajar mandiri memiliki korelasi dengan hasil belajar siswa dikelas Public Speaking skills. Oleh karena itu, indikator yang telah diklasifikasikan dapat digunakan sebagai alat ukur untuk mengukur tingkat kemandirian mahasiswa di kelas Public Speaking. Autonomous learning is the ability to take charge of one’s own learning. This study was conducted to find out to what extent students practice autonomous learning in Public Speaking classes at English Department, State University of Jakarta. This study uses a survey method since the researcher gathered the data from samples to identify students’ opinion, behaviors, and knowledge related to autonomous learning provided with statistical result. The data were collected through questionnaire, interview, and observation to support the data. This research shows that there are 14 characteristics of autonomous learning in Public Speaking classes. From 45 respondents who completed the questionnaires, there are 44, 5% students have high level of autonomous learning of Public Speaking skills, 55, 6% is at middle level, and there is no student at low level or as much as 0%. Besides, it is found that the autonomous learning have mediocre correlation relationships with Public Speaking skills’ final score. Finally, the researcher can identify low, middle, and high autonomous learners’ characteristics. Thus, indicators that have been classified can then be used to develop a measuring tool to measure the degree of students’ independence in Public Speaking skill.
