Abstract

ABSTRAK (Bahasa Indonesia) Geisha of Gion adalah salah satu auto/biografi pertama yang ditulis oleh seorang Geisha. Buku ini diterbitkan pada awal periode 2000-an, ketika profesi Geisha masih menjadi misteri bagi masyarakat di luar distrik-distrik hiburan di Jepang. Mineko Iwasaki, sang penulis, bertekad untuk menyibak misteri profesi Geisha serta memberikan penjelasan terhadap banyaknya miskonsepsi yang beredar seputar citra seorang Geisha, terutama di belahan dunia barat. Penelitian ini mengamati dan menganalisis bagaimana sosok diri dalam narasi auto/biografi Geisha of Gion ditampilkan oleh sang penulis, Mineko Iwasaki, baik sebagai Geisha maupun sebagai wanita Jepang. Performativitas gender menjadi isu utama dalam penggambaran kedua aspek diri tersebut, karena pengharapan masyarakat akan seorang Geisha seringkali bermuka ganda. Melalui analisis deskriptif, auto/biografi Geisha of Gion mengungkapkan bahwa meskipun Mineko Iwasaki tetap memenuhi ekspektasi masyarakat terhadap seorang Geisha, ia juga menyampaikan opini yang tegas akan konsep perempuan Jepang, menciptakan suatu konsepsi diri yang kompleks. Temuan ini sejalan dengan argumen bahwa gender dan identitas penulis ditampilkan dalam bentuk fragmen-fragmen sebagai dokumen sosial, sesuai dengan teori yang dicetuskan René Wellek and Austin Warren mengenai Sosiologi sastra. Kata Kunci: analisis sosiologi sastra, geisha, wanita, Jepang, autobiografi, auto/biografi, Geisha of Gion ********* ABSTRACT (Bahasa Inggris) Geisha of Gion is one of the first auto/biographies of a Geisha, written in the early 2000s when the big part of the Geisha profession is still a mystery to the society outside the flower districts. Mineko Iwasaki, the author, sought to demystify the world of Geisha as well as to clarify some of the misconceptions floating around the image of the Geisha, especially in the western world. This study observes and analyzes how Iwasaki portrays the self in the narrative of her auto/biography both as a Geisha and a Japanese woman. Gender performance is a major issue when it comes to the portrayal of both aspects, as the societal expectations toward a Geisha is often double-sided. Through descriptive analysis, the auto/biography Geisha of Gion reveals that while Mineko Iwasaki adheres to the expectation toward a Geisha, she also shows a strong stance in her opinion of a Japanese woman, creating a complex being and agreeing to René Wellek and Austin Warren theory sociology of literature where literature acts as social document comes in fragments.
