Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis strategi kesantunan yang digunakan oleh Prince Harry dalam program The Late Late Show with James Corden. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjawab dua pertanyaan penelitian. Rumusan pertanyaan penelitian adalah sebagai berikut: 1.) Apa saja strategi kesantunan Brown dan Levinson yang digunakan Pangeran Harry dalam The Late Late Show with James Corden? Dan 2.) Bagaimana Pangeran Harry menggunakan ucapan tersebut untuk mengurangi ancaman lawan bicara dalam The Late Late Show with James Corden? Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan pragmatis. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif analitik interpretatif untuk menjawab kedua pertanyaan penelitian tersebut. Data penelitian ini adalah tuturan Pangeran Harry yang diambil dari naskah YouTube berjudul An Afternoon with Prince Harry & James Corden. Penulis menggunakan teori strategi kesantunan Brown dan Levinson untuk menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 38 data yang memuat strategi kesantunan yang meliputi kesantunan positif, kesantunan negatif, off-record, dan bald on record. Strategi kesantunan positif paling banyak digunakan oleh Pangeran Harry dengan 18 tuturan (47,4%). Jenis strategi kesantunan terbanyak kedua yang digunakan Pangeran Harry dalam The Late Late Show with James Corden adalah off-record dengan 8 ucapan (21,1%). Posisi ketiga dari jenis strategi kesantunan yang digunakan Pangeran Harry dalam The Late Late Show with James Corden adalah strategi bald on record dengan 7 ucapan (18,4%). Posisi keempat dari jenis strategi kesantunan yang digunakan oleh Pangeran Harry dalam The Late Late Show dengan James Corden adalah kesantunan negatif dengan 5 ucapan (13,2%). The study is conducted to analyze the politeness strategy used by Prince Harry in The Late Late Show with James Corden. This study aims to answer two research questions. The research questions were formulated as follows: 1.) What are Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies used by Prince Harry in The Late Late Show with James Corden? And 2.) How Prince Harry used the utterance to reduce the threat of interlocutors in The Late Late Show with James Corden? This study deals with a pragmatic approach. This study employs a descriptive analytical interpretive design to answer the two research questions. The data of the study were Prince Harry’s utterances, which were taken from YouTube script entitled An Afternoon with Prince Harry & James Corden. The writer uses Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategy theory to analyze the data. The results showed that there are 38 data that contain politeness strategies including positive politeness, negative politeness, off-record, and bald on record. Positive politeness strategies are the most frequently used by Prince Harry with 18 utterances (47,4%). The second highest number of the type of politeness strategy used by Prince Harry in The Late Late Show with James Corden is off-record with 8 utterances (21,1%). The third position of the type of politeness strategy used by Prince Harry in The Late Late Show with James Corden is bald on record strategy with 7 utterances (18,4%). The fourth position of the type of politeness strategy used by Prince Harry in The Late Late Show with James Corden is negative politeness with 5 utterances (13,2%).
