Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi sebuah ketimpangan sosial yang terbentuk melalui media baik dari AS dan Inggris dengan menggunakan teori Circuit of Culture. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana teori Circuit of Culture dapat digunakan untuk mendefinisikan suatu momen aktual dalam bentuk dan kondisi keberadaannya sendiri yang tidak terbatas pada cerita atau momen fiktif. Fenomena yang mencengangkan yakni wawancara eksklusif Meghan Markle yang diadakan oleh Oprah Winfrey dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif analitis dalam teks tertulis yang digunakan untuk mendefinisikan keberadaan unsur-unsur kesenjangan sosial yang digambarkan oleh Media AS dan Inggris yang mewakili budaya, gaya hidup, kata-kata, dan kesempatan yang tidak adil dalam anggota masyarakat tertentu yang bias antara perspektif masyarakat AS dan Inggris. Meghan yang notabene merupakan non bangsawan menikah dengan salah satu anggota keluarga kerajaan, dampak yang ia alami sampai sekarang membentuk keputusannya untuk meninggalkan keluarga kerajaan. Dalam membentuk representasi dan identitas, berbagai pernyataan dari media baik dari media AS maupun media Inggris dapat dilakukan perbandingan. Dengan menggunakan media terkenal AS seperti NBC News, CBS News, The Newyorker, USA Today dan Vox, serta Media Inggris seperti BBC, Daily Mail, Express, Mirror, The Independent dan sebagainya, penelitian ini menerapkan perbandingan antara bagaimana masing-masing negara merepresentasikan media kepada para khalayak. Hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan menunjukkan bahwa bahasa dapat menghasilkan makna yang membangun identitas individu dan sosial. *** This study aims to analyze the representation of the existence of social inequality that is formed through the media both from US and UK using the Circuit of Culture theory. The main objective of this paper is to find out how Circuit of Culture theory can be used to define an actual moment its own forms and conditions of existence not limited to fictitious story or moment. The phenomenon of Meghan Markle’s shocking interview conducted by Oprah Winfrey will be analyzed by using a descriptive analytical method in written text which is used to define the existence of elements of social inequality portrayed by US and UK Media that represent culture, lifestyle, words, and unfair opportunities in certain members of society that are biased between US and UK society perspectives. Meghan who married one of the members of the Royals and she faced the impact of it in her life until now she decided to leave the Monarch. In forming representation and identity, various statements from the media, both from US media and UK media, are required to be compared. By using well-known US Media such as NBC News, CBS News, The Newyorker, USA Today and Vox, also the UK Media such as BBC, Daily Mail, Express, Mirror, The Independent and so on, this study implements on having comparison between how each country represent the media to the audiences. The results of the research that has been done show that language can produce a meaning that builds an individual and social identity.
