Abstract

Citation is a fundamental feature in academic writing as it serves a reliable source of information to support writer’s claim or argument. The way cited authors are represented in a text is a part of the form of citation. This study aims to find out and discuss the forms used on citation practices of ELESP undergraduate students’ theses in Universitas Negeri Jakarta. This research uses qualitative method with descriptive statistics to give the description of numerical data. The analysis is conducted by adopting Hyland’s framework of citation category and Swales’s framework of citation integration. The data source of this research consist of 50 theses of introduction and literature review chapter written by ELESP undergraduate students with the theses topics is English Language Teaching (ELT) published from 2018 to 2022 in repository of UNJ. The result found that ELESP undergraduate students frequently use summary and generalization in introduction andliterature review chapter. Furthermore, in terms of citation integration employed were different in both chapters: ELESP undergraduate students display preference for non-integral citation in the introduction chapter to emphasize the information from previous research while the use of integral citation was found to appear more in literature review chapter which indicate that the students focus on the actions of researchers in cited sources. ********** Kutipan adalah fitur dasar dalam penulisan akademis karena menyediakan sumber informasi yang dapat dipercaya untuk mendukung pernyataan dan argumen penulis. Cara para penulis yang dikutip ditunjukan dalam teks adalah bagian dari bentuk kutipan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji dan mendiskusikan bentuk yang digunakan dalam praktik kutipan di skripsi mahasiswa prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan statistika deskriptif untuk memberikan deskripsi data numerik. Analisis dilakukan dengan mengadopsi kerangka pendekatan Hyland yaitu kategori kutipan dan kerangka pendekatan Swales yaitu integrasi kutipan. Sumber data pada penelitian ini terdiri dari 50 skripsi bab pendahuluan dan tinjauan pustaka yang ditulis oleh mahasiswa prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dengan topik pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang dipublikasi dari tahun 2018 sampai 2022 di repository UNJ. Hasil menemukan bahwa mahasiswa prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris sering menggunakan rangkuman dan generalisasi dalam bab pendahuluan dan tinjauan pustaka. Selain itu, dalam hal integrasi kutipan yang digunakan berbeda di kedua bab: mahasiswa prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris menampilkan preferensi untuk kutipan yang tidak integral dalam bab pendahuluan untuk menekankan informasi dari penelitian sebelumnya sementara penggunaan kutipan integral ditemukan banyak muncul di bab tinjauan pustaka yang mengindikasikan bahwa siswa fokus pada tindakan peneliti dalam mengutip sumber.
