Abstract
How to Train Your Dragon karya Cressida Cowell. ***** This study aims to investigate how the construction of the main character's identity changes the stereotype of Viking violence depicted in the novel How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. This research uses Vladimir Propp's narrative concept regarding Dramatis Personae which consists of 31 narrative functions and 7 spheres of action using an analytical descriptive method to examine the characterization of Hiccup as the main character in the story. The results showed that there were 20 of 31 functions of Vladimir Propp’s narrative functions and 6 of 7 spheres of action by showing the difference between Hiccup's characterization and Viking violence. The character of Hiccup who does not use violence is caused by the relationship between the differences that exist in Hiccup which is not well received by the Vikings who tend to use violence resulting in a damaged stereotype. From the results that have been classified from each plot using Propp’s narrative structure and spheres of action, there are several significant differences between the characterization of hiccups with Viking violence which then linked the relation between it. The difference between appearance and characterization that Hiccup and the Viking stereotype to use violence upbringing encourages Hiccup to break existing stereotypes to prove himself that he is capable of being a hero without having to use violence. Keywords: Violence, Stereotype, Viking, Vladimir Propp, Narrative functions.
