Abstract
Kata kunci: ekofeminis, mother earth (ibu bumi), semiotika seni, lima babak naratif, buku cerita bergambar ***** This research aims to analyse the Ecofeminist Ethic of Care represented by the relationship between nature which symbolised Mother Earth and the human characters. The data used in this study are five folktales taken from a book entitled The Tiny Boy and Other Tales, written by Dr. Murti Bunanta, and illustrated by Hardiyono. The stories included are entitled Hua Lo Puu from North Maluku, Masarasenani and The Sun from West Papua, The Tiny Boy from South Sulawesi, Ampak and The Cunning Civet Cat from South Kalimantan, and Senggutru from Central Java. The stories are chosen for their similarities in settings, which are set in rural areas. In conducting this analysis, the writer adopts the theory of Space and Place to analyse the settings introduced by Peter Hunt, Narrative Structure (Propositions and The 5 Stages of Narrative, including Equilibrium, Disruption, Recognition, Attempt, and New Equilibrium) by Tzvetan Todorov to analyse the written texts, and The Semiotics of Art (Modal, Representational, and Compositional Metafunctions) by Michael O'Toole to analyse the visual texts of the five stories. The results of the Space and Place analysis shows that the internal setting (spaces) of the stories corresponds with the external place of each region where the stories come from. Through this analysis, it is shown that Mother Earth symbols in each story can be found in the settings. This is affirmed with the analysis of the textual and visual narratives which show that the five stories selected represent the symbol of Mother Earth both in the settings and side characters. Through the analysis of interaction between human characters, both men and women, and Mother Earth symbols, it is found that the Ecofeminist Ethic of Care is represented in each story. However, the care shown by human characters is conditional compared to the nurturing care provided by Mother Earth. Keywords: ecofeminist, mother earth, art semiotics, five stages of narrative, children’s picturebook
