Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pesimisme defensif dalam novel Five Feet Apart dengan menerapkan teori pesimisme defensif Norem dan Cantor yang dilakukan dengan struktur Naratif Todorov. Analisis diterapkan pada sumber data yang diperoleh dari narasi dan dialog dalam novel. Penelitian ini berfokus pada interaksi dan hubungan antara Will Newman dan Stella Grant, termasuk perkembangan karakter yang menunjukkan sifat pesimis dan strategi pesimisme defensif yang dilakukan. Ciri-ciri pesimis yang teridentifikasi adalah ragu-ragu, mudah menyerah, takut untuk mengambil langkah selanjutnya, cepat kecewa pada kegagalan pertama, memperkirakan kemungkinan yang buruk, mencoba untuk menjauhi kenyataan, menghindari masalah, dan mengasihani diri sendiri. Sementara itu, pesimisme defensif ditempuh dengan beberapa strategi, yaitu tidak berekspektasi terlalu tinggi dengan menggunakan kegagalan sebelumnya sebagai tolak ukur dan fokus untuk mengatasi kekhawatiran daripada meraih tujuan. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa pada fase ekuilibrium, sifat pesimis paling dominan ada pada diri Will Newman. Ia sudah terlanjur kecewa dengan setiap hasil pengobatannya yang tidak menunjukkan perkembangan positif. Will menetapkan ekspektasi yang rendah dan menggunakan kegagalan dan kekecewaannya sebagai tolak ukur ekspektasinya. Sementara itu, Stella, pada fase equilibrium, telah menunjukkan pesimisme defensif sebagai strategi untuk mengatasi kekhawatirannya terhadap situasi keluarganya. Hingga akhirnya, pada fase equilibrium baru, Stella mengadopsi sifat pesimis Will dan Will juga mengadopsi sikap hati-hati Stella. Penelitian ini menemukan perkembangan karakter dewasa muda yang dialami oleh karakter utama dalam cerita melalui analisis struktur naratif Todorov. ***** This study aims to analyze defensive pessimism in the novel Five Feet Apart by applying Norem and Cantor's theory of defensive pessimism conducted with Todorov's Narrative structure. The analysis is applied to the source data obtained from the narration and dialog in the novel. The research focuses on the interaction and relationship between Will Newman and Stella Grant, including the development of characters who exhibit pessimistic traits and the defensive pessimism strategies employed. The identified pessimistic traits are doubtful, giving up easily, fearful of taking the next step, quickly disappointed at the first failure, expecting the worst, avoiding reality, avoiding problems, and self-pity. Meanwhile, defensive pessimism is pursued with several strategies, namely not having too high expectations by using previous failures as benchmarks and focusing on overcoming worries rather than achieving goals. This study found that in the equilibrium phase, pessimism was most dominant in Will Newman. He was already disappointed with every result of his treatment that did not show positive progress. Will sets low expectations and uses his failures and disappointments as a benchmark for his expectations. Meanwhile, Stella, in the equilibrium phase, has shown defensive pessimism as a strategy to cope with her worries about her family situation. Until finally, in the new equilibrium phase, Stella adopts WilL's pessimistic nature and Will also adopts Stella's cautious attitude. This research finds the young adult character development experienced by the main characters in the story through analyzing Todorov's narrative structure.
