Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of Melanie Elturk’s Muslimah identity in Haute Hijab’s Instagram posts using the theory of Social Semiotics from Kress and Van Leeuwen and Systemic Functional Linguistics (transitivity) from M.A.K. Halliday. Descriptive analytical methodology is applied to analyze the visual and written elements of the pictures and captions from eight posts of Melanie Elturk in Haute Hijab’s (@hautehijab) Instagram posts. The result of the analysis shows that Haute Hijab constructs Melanie Elturk’s Muslimah identity by using the elements from representational, interpersonal, and compositional metafunctions and processes from transitivity system. Visual elements such as clothes, accessories, makeup, facial expressions, gestures, locations, and written elements such as relational, material, mental, behavioural, and existential processes are utilized to construct her identity as a modern, emancipated, active, and successful business woman in Haute Hijab’s Instagram posts which counteract the stereotypes built by Western media about Muslim women. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis konstruksi identitas Muslimah dari Melanie Elturk di kiriman Instagram milik Haute Hijab menggunakan teori Semiotik Sosial dari Kress dan Van Leeuwen dan Systemic Functional Linguistics (transitivitas) dari M.A.K. Halliday. Metode analisis deskriptif digunakan untuk menganalisis elemen-elemen dalam gambar dan keterangan teks dari delapan kiriman Haute Hijab (@hautehijab) yang memuat figur Melanie Elturk di Instagram. Hasil analisis menyimpulkan bahwa Elturk mengkonstruksi identitas Muslimah dirinya dengan menggunakan elemen-elemen metafungsi representasional, interpersonal dan komposisional serta proses-proses transitivitas. Elemen-elemen visual seperti pakaian, aksesori, riasan, mimik wajah, gerak tubuh, lokasi, dan elemen-elemen tekstual seperti proses relasional, mental, material, behavioral, eksistensial dan verbal dimanfaatkan untuk mengkonstruksi identitas Melanie Elturk sebagai wanita pebisnis yang modern, emansipatif, aktif, dan sukses di Instagram Haute Hijab untuk menyangkal stereotip negatif yang dibangun oleh media Barat tentang Muslimah.
