Abstract

This thesis analyzed the identity crisis of the mixed race main character and the relationship between her being mixed race and her identity crisis in the novel Swing Time by Zadie Smith. Swing Time is told by the main character who tells her life as a mixed race person from a white father and a black mother. In her life journey, the main character often questions her existence in various communities, studied by analyzing narrative and dialogues in the novel using references from Eric Erikson's theory, namely Development of Stage and also using Homi's hybrid identity theory. K Bhabha. The Narrator does not immediately experience an identity crisis, but there are symptoms that she is experiencing an identity crisis influenced by her mixed race and hybridity. In the end, all the symptoms of an identity crisis related to her mixed race make The Narrator accept her identity.*****Skripsi ini menganalisis krisis identitas karakter utama ras campuran dan hubungannya dengan krisis identitas di dalam novel Swing Time karya Zadie Smith. Swing Time diceritakan oleh karakter utama yang menceritakan kehidupannya yang merupakan seorang ras campuran dari ayah berkulit putih dan ibu berkulit hitam. Dalam perjalanan hidupnya, karakter utama sering sekali bertanya eksistensinya di berbagai komunitas, yang diteliti dengan menganalisis kutipan narasi dan dialog yang ada di dalam novel menggunakan referensi dari teori Eric Erikson yaitu Development of Stage dan juga menggunakan teori hybrid identitas Homi. K Bhabha. The Narrator tidak serta merta mengalami krisis identitas, tetapi terdapat tanda-tanda bahwa ia mengalami krisis identitas yang dipengaruhi oleh ras campurannya. Pada akhirnya semua tanda-tanda krisis identitas yang berhubungan dengan ras campuran membuat The Narrator menerima jati dirinya.
