Abstract

***** This study aims to determine the differences in emotion regulation strategies between the Javanese and Batak tribes, especially in the use of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression strategies. This study uses a quantitative approach with a comparative design. The data collection technique was carried out by distributing the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) developed by Gross and John (2003), as well as three additional self-reflection items. The study participants were 224 respondents consisting of early adults (aged 18 years and over) and came from the Javanese and Batak tribes. The results of the Independent Sample t-Test analysis showed that there was no significant difference in the use of reappraisal and suppression strategies between the two tribes. This finding suggests that emotion regulation strategies may not be entirely influenced by cultural background, but also by individual factors such as cognitive reflection capacity. This study contributes to the study of cross-cultural psychology and shows the importance of considering cultural and personal factors in understanding emotion regulation.
