Abstract

***** People commonly make assumptions about what they believe or understand from their interlocutors’ utterances, and Yule (1996) defines these assumptions as presupposition. The use of presupposition can also reflect people’s tendency of beliefs. This study applies qualitative method to analyse the types of presupposition employed in A Haunting in Venice (2023) movie screenplay and its indication of two opposing beliefs such as rational and mystical. The findings revealed 163 presuppositions, with all types occur such as existential (43,56%), factive (11,04%), lexical (30,67%), structural (7,36%), nonfactive (3,07%), and counterfactual (4,29%). The domination of existential presupposition is affected by how the trigger functions and how it correlates to emphasize the conflict. Furthermore, the characters’ use of presupposition also reflects their opposing beliefs, such as rational and mystical. Through the lens of binary opposition by Levi Strauss (1963), the finding revealed that two characters with opposing beliefs experience a transition in their belief and certainty, though rational belief remains more superior than the mystical belief ultimately.
