Abstract

This research analyzes the representation of labor exploitation and ideological domination in Mickey 17 (2025) by integrating Marxist theory, Antonio Gramsci’s concept of hegemony, and Daniel Chandler’s semiotics. Mickey 17 portrays the main character, Mickey Barnes, as a cloned worker who is continually exploited physically, biologically, and ideologically within a futuristic capitalist space colonization system. Through the process of repeated cloning and consciousness transfer, the film shows how workers’ bodies and identities are reduced to production commodities that can be replaced at any time, illustrating a profound cycle of alienation from the product, the act of production, and critically, from their own species-being and other human beings, leading to existential exploitation where human value is systematically erased. This research uses a qualitative method with descriptive-interpretative techniques of dialogue, visuals, and narrative symbols in the film. Gramsci’s concept of hegemony is applied to reveal how capitalist ideology successfully normalizes class inequality and prevents workers’ collective consciousness by subtly gaining consent for their disposable status. Simultaneously, Chandler’s semiotics is utilized to decode visual and narrative symbol that reinforce these dominant ideologies and the dehumanization inherent in the system. The result of the analysis shows that exploitation in Mickey 17 is not only material but existential, where the ideology of capitalism succeeds in normalizing class inequality and preventing workers’ collective consciousness. However, the film also displays the potential for resistance through class solidarity that emerges as a form of resistance to the hegemonic system. This research contributes to understanding how science fiction, particularly through its depiction of cyclical cloning, can be effective medium of social critique of the contemporary capitalist system by highlighting novel forms of exploitation and resistance.
