Abstract

***** This study explores the main character's obsession and mental state in Pearl (2022), a psychological horror film by Ti West. Utilising Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic theory of the Three Orders: The Imaginary, The Symbolic, and The Real, this study analyses the causes underlying Pearl's obsessive desire to become a star and its effects on her mental state. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method by examining narrative elements such as dialogue and character interactions, along with visual aspects analysed through Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic semiotic model. The finding reveals that Pearl's obsession emerges from internal fantasies, social pressure, and unfulfilled desires, which gradually lead to a distortion of reality. Additionally, repressed desires, unresolved trauma, and a lack of emotional support contribute to deep psychological disorders, driving her to commit acts of violence. This study provides a deeper understanding of how unresolved obsessions and psychological conflicts can develop into destructive behaviour. Furthermore, it contributes to broader discussions on mental health, social pressure, and the representation of female identity in psychological horror cinema.
