Abstract

Peran dan tanggung jawab perempuan dalam keluarga sering kali dibentuk oleh konstruksi sosial dan ekspektasi gender yang bersifat turun-temurun, khususnya dalam struktur keluarga patriarkal. Dalam konteks keluarga, anak perempuan pertama kerap memikul beban yang lebih besar secara emosional maupun praktis. Karakter Nina Riva dalam novel Malibu Rising (2021) karya Taylor Jenkins Reid merepresentasikan beban berlapis yang harus dihadapi anak perempuan pertama, terutama ketika berada dalam keluarga yang disfungsional. Studi ini menganalisis beban gender yang dialami Nina dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif berbasis Role Theory dari Bruce J. Biddle dan teori feminis radikal dari Kate Millett. Analisis difokuskan pada bagaimana peran sosial yang dilekatkan pada perempuan, terutama anak pertama, membentuk identitas, tanggung jawab emosional, serta tekanan psikologis dalam keluarga. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Nina mengalami fenomena parentifikasi, di mana ia mengambil alih peran orang tua baik secara emosional maupun praktis sejak usia dini. Ketiadaan figur orang tua dalam keluarga memperkuat ekspektasi tersebut dan menjadikan Nina sebagai figur sentral pengasuhan. Selain itu, beban ganda yang ditanggung Nina sebagai perempuan yang harus menjalankan peran publik dan domestik sekaligus turut memperlihatkan ketimpangan peran berbasis gender. Lebih jauh, studi ini menekankan bahwa beban yang dialami oleh anak perempuan pertama dalam keluarga patriarkal tidak hanya terbentuk dari dinamika keluarga, tetapi juga merupakan refleksi dari konstruksi sosial yang lebih luas terkait peran dan identitas perempuan.***** The roles and responsibilities of women within the family are often shaped by social constructs and gender expectations that are hereditary, particularly within patriarchal family structures. Firstborn daughters often bear a greater burden emotionally and practically in the family context. The character Nina Riva in Taylor Jenkins Reid's Malibu Rising (2021) represents the multiple burdens that firstborn daughters face, especially in families that are dysfunctional. This study examines Nina's gendered burden using a qualitative approach based on Bruce J. Biddle's Role Theory and Kate Millett's radical feminist theory. The analysis focused on how social roles attached to women, especially first children, shape identity, emotional responsibility, and psychological pressure in the family. The results showed that Nina experienced the phenomenon of parentification, where she took over the role of parents both emotionally and practically since her early age. The absence of a parental figure in the family reinforced these expectations and made Nina the central figure of parenting. The double burden that Nina carried as a woman, who had to carry out public and domestic roles at the same time, also showed the inequality of gender-based roles. Furthermore, this study emphasizes that the burden experienced by the first daughter in a patriarchal family is not only formed from family dynamics, but also reflects broader social constructions related to women's roles and identities.
