Abstract

***** This study explored the portrayal of child abuse survivors and their recovery process in the manga My Hero Academia, focusing on the four Todoroki siblings: Shoto, Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Toya. The primary aim of this research is to examine how both visual and written texts represent childhood abuse and recovery, and how these modes work together to construct meaning. The study employed Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual social semiotics framework for analyzing visual elements and Halliday’s transitivity system for textual analysis. The findings revealed that representational meaning in the visual mode is predominantly conveyed through narrative processes. Interpersonally, characters are typically depicted through observed gaze, medium angles, and close shots, except for Natsuo who is more frequently framed in medium shots. Compositionally, most characters appear as salient and centered figures, with Fuyumi being the least salient. Textually, Shoto and Fuyumi are characterized through material and relational processes; Natsuo through material, relational, and mental processes; and Toya through material and mental processes. The study concluded that the integration between visual and verbal elements effectively supports the portrayal of child abuse survivors and their journey toward recovery.
