Abstract
The Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (The CSCI). ***** Improving school engagement has become a specific goal of many school and district improvement efforts, especially at the secondary school level (Fredricks et al., 2004). One factor related to school engagement is a safe and positive school climate for all school members, especially students. School climate refers to the quality and characteristics of a school (Cohen et al., 2009). The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of school climate on school engagement in public junior high schools in Cakung District. The respondents of this research consisted of 501 seventh and eighth grade students from six public junior high schools in Cakung District. The measurement tools used were the School Engagement Measure (SEM) – MacArthur and The Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (The CSCI). The results of the hypothesis test using simple linear regression showed that there was a significant positive influence of school climate on school engagement in public junior high schools in Cakung District. Additionally, the coefficient of determination or R-squared (R²) value was found to be 0,244. This indicates that school climate influences school engagement by 24,4%, while the remaining 75,6% is influenced by other variables not examined in this research.
