Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji peran Uskup Geise dalam ranah kebudayaan dan pendidikan selama periode 1938-1975. Tujuan utama dari kajian ini adalah untuk mencari tahu, bagaimana model kepimpinan Mgr. Geise sebagai Uskup Bogor, termasuk pendekatan, kebijakan serta inisiatif yang dilakukan dalam upaya adaptasi Gereja Katolik terhadap masyarakat Sunda lokal. Fokus diarahkan pada bentuk-bentuk kompromi budaya yang dilakukan Gereja serta usaha untuk memperluas, meningkatkan, dan mendirikan lembaga serta pusat-pusat pendidikan. Sumber data diperoleh dari berbagai dokumen relevan di Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia, Perpustakaan STF Drijakara, repositori UIKA Parahayangan, majalah Katolik Keuskupan Bogor, sejumlah literatur ajaran Katolik, serta disertasi pribadi Uskup Geise mengenai masyarakat lokal. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode historis dengan pendekatan deskriptif-naratif, yang terdiri atas heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi dan historiografi. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Mgr. Geise, merupakan figur penuh daya tarik. Sebagai uskup pertama Keuskupan Bogor, beliau memiliki tanggung jawab besar dalam meletakkan dasar-dasar kelembagaan dan spiritual bagi perkembangan Gereja Katolik di wilayah tersebut. Peran tersebut dijalankannya melalui pendekatan yang progresif, yakni dengan memperkuat posisi Gereja melalui dialog lintas budaya dan agama, serta mendorong pendirian sejumlah institusi pendidikan penting di wilayah Keuskupan Bogor dan Keuskupan Bandung. Kiprahnya dalam mendukung berbagai kongregasi dalam upaya pendirian sekolah-sekolah, turut berkontribusi terhadap peningkatan kualitas pendidikan dan literasi di Indonesia, hingga mengantarkannya pada pengakuan, tidak hanya tingkat lokal, tetapi juga oleh pemerintah, atas kontribusinya dalam pembangunan pendidikan nasional. Uskup Geise merupakan pelopor dalam membangun dialog antarbudaya dan antaragama, suatu upaya yang tidak luput dari perharian masyarakat Sunda setempat maupun para penerus ordinaris Keuskupan Bogor. Namun demikian, karya pelayanannya tidak terlepas dari kritik. Salah satu kelemahan utama yang dikaitkan dengan masa kepemimpinannya adalah ketidakberhasilannya dalam memperbanyak populasi umat Katolik pribumi lokal di wilayah Keuskupan Bogor. Meskipun demikian, dengan segala keterbatasan yang ada, Mgr. Geise tetap menunjukkan keteguhan strategi pastoralnya melalui upaya mendorong ordinasi imam-imam pribumi dan memotivasi mereka yang tertarik menjadi ordinaris, untuk mengabdikan diri bagi pelayanan dalam Keuskupan Kata Kunci: Budaya, Geise, Katolik, Pendidikan, Biografi ***** This study examines the role of Bishop Geise in the realms of culture and education from 1938 to 1975 period. The primary objective is to explore his leadership as the frist Bishop of Bogor, including his approaches, policies and initiatives in facilitating the Catholic Church’s adaptation to the local Sundanese community. The study focuses primarily on the Church’s cultural compromises and it’s efforts to expand, improve dan establish educational institutions and centers. Data sources include various relevan documents from the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, Library of STF Drijakara, repository of Parahayangan Catholic University, Catholic magazines of Diocese of Bogor, a selection of Catholic doctrinal literatures, as well as Bishop Geise’s own dissertation studying the local community. The research employs the historical method with a descriptuve-narrative approach, consisting of heuristic, verification, interpretation and historiography. This study concludes that Bishop Geise was a complex and compelling figure. As the first Bishop of Bogor, he bore the significant responsibility of laying the institutional and spiritual foundations for the Catholic Church in the region, thereby shaping the trajectory for his successors. He fulfilled his role through a progressive and contextually sensitive approach, fortifying the Church’s position by means of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, and promoting the establishment of major educational institutions withun the Diocese of Bogor and the Diocese of Bandung. His support for various religious congregations om founding educational institutions not only enhanced his reputation but also garnered recognition from the central government, due to his substantial contribution to improving access to education and literacy in West Java. Bishop Geise was a pioneering figure, and his efforts did not go unnoticed by the local Sundanese community nor by his ordained successors. Nevertheless, his missionary endeavors were not without criticism. One of the critical shortcomings attributed to his tenure, was the limited expansion of the Catholic population. This stagnation, contributed to the initial lack of prominence and influence of the newly established Apostolic Prefecture of Bogor. However, despite these limitations, Bishop Geise demonstrated strategic resilience by promoting the ordinations of local clergy and encouraging them to devote themselves to diocesan service efforts that significantly contributed to the growth and long-term sustainability of the Catholic Church in Indonesia.
