Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas bagaimana Ahmad Dhani menjadikan musik sebagai media kritik sosial-politik pada masa Orde Baru, khususnya pada periode 1994–1998. Fokus penelitian berpusat pada lagu-lagu yang diciptakan Ahmad Dhani bersama Dewa 19 dan Ahmad Band, yang mengandung pesan kritik sosial berupa kegelisahan terhadap kondisi sosial-politik Indonesia di masa rezim Orde Baru. Latar belakang penelitian ini didasari oleh terbatasnya kebebasan berekspresi pada masa Orde Baru, yang mendorong munculnya cara alternatif dalam menyampaikan kritik sosial-politik, yaitu musik. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah dengan lima tahapan, yaitu pemilihan topik, heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Sumber-sumber yang digunakan untuk mendukung penelitian meliputi album fisik, arsip media massa, wawancara, serta literatur yang relevan dengan kajian sejarah, musik, dan politik. Teori yang akan digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori kritik sosial dan teori komunikasi musikal & politik yang digunakan untuk menganalisis makna, bentuk, dan strategi penyampaian kritik dalam karya-karya Ahmad Dhani. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Ahmad Dhani memanfaatkan musik sebagai media komunikasi politik untuk menyampaikan kritik sosial terhadap pembatasan kebebasan berekspresi, praktik demokrasi, serta krisis moral pada masa Orde Baru. Kritik tersebut umumnya disampaikan dengan penulisan lirik yang penuh kiasan dan metafora. terutama pada karya-karya Dewa 19, sehingga dapat dikategorikan sebagai kritik sosial tertutup. Namun, pada tahun-tahun terakhir akhir Orde Baru, khususnya melalui Ahmad Band, kritik disampaikan secara lebih terbuka dan frontal, sejalan dengan menguatnya krisis sosial-politik. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Ahmad Dhani memiliki rekam jejak dalam menggunakan musik sebagai media kritik sosial-politik sebagai bagian dari dinamika sejarah industri musik Indonesia pada masa Orde Baru. ***** This study was made to examines Ahmad Dhani’s works in using music as a medium of socio-political criticism during Indonesia’s New Order regime, particularly in the period from 1994 to 1998. The research focuses on songs composed by Ahmad Dhani with Dewa 19 and Ahmad Band, which reflect social anxieties and political criticism in the years leading up to the collapse of the New Order. The background of this study is rooted in the limited space for freedom of expression during the New Order, which encouraged the emergence of an alternative media to deliver a socio-political criticism, one of which was music. This research employs the historical method, consisting of five steps, beginning with choosing the topic, heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography stages. The sources used include song lyrics, mass media archives, interviews, and relevant literature related to history, music, and politics. The analysis applies social criticism theory and a political communication approach to examine the meaning, form, and strategies of criticism expressed in Ahmad Dhani’s works. The findings indicate that Ahmad Dhani utilized music as a medium of political communication to criticize restrictions on freedom of expression, bureaucratic practices, and the morality crisis during the New Order period. The criticism was generally full of allusions and metaphors, particularly in Dewa 19’s works, and can be categorized as covert social criticism. However, towards the end of the New Order, especially through Ahmad Band, the criticism became more explicit and frontal, in line with the escalating socio-political crisis. Therefore, this study concludes that Ahmad Dhani has a track record on using music as a medium of socio-political criticism as an integral part of the history of Indonesia’s music industry during the New Order era.
