Abstract

***** This study aims to analyze the relationship between students' perceptions of the usefulness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) from a cognitive aspect and learning outcomes in the Research Methodology course in the Mechanical Engineering Education Study Program at UNJ. The study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The study sample consisted of 52 students selected purposively from the 2020–2022 intake. Data were collected through a perception questionnaire based on the Cognitive Flexibility theory as primary data and official academic grades from the UNJ administration as secondary data. The results of the validity and reliability tests showed the instrument was valid and highly reliable (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.952). The data were normally distributed and homogeneous, so they were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation. The results showed a significant moderate positive correlation between cognitive perceptions of AI and learning outcomes (r = 0.403; p < 0.05). A total of 83% of students used AI, with ChatGPT as the most dominant platform (63%). These findings support the Cognitive Flexibility theory that positive perceptions of AI can improve cognitive adaptability, critical thinking, and student learning outcomes. The research implications provide input for the development of adaptive and ethical AI-based learning strategies in higher education environments.
