Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis permasalahan teknik permainan pada Viola Concerto Gerakan I karya Béla Bartók edisi Tibor Serly, serta menjelaskan proses penciptaan etude kontekstual sebagai solusi dalam mengatasi permasalahan teknik permainan melalui metode practice-based research. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui studi dokumen dan partitur, refleksi praktik, dokumentasi praktik, serta observasi terhadap praktik pemain viola lain yang diperdalam dengan wawancara reflektif. Analisis data dilakukan melalui empat tahap, yaitu: (1) analisis dokumen dan partitur untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis bentuk permasalahan teknik serta mengkaji teori pedagogi Carl Flesch; (2) analisis praktik menggunakan thematic analysis Braun dan Clarke untuk mengidentifikasi pola permasalahan teknik yang muncul secara berulang; (3) analisis artefak menurut Nelson untuk mengkaji etude kontekstual yang disusun sebagai respons terhadap permasalahan penelitian, dan (4) analisis refleksi menurut Schön untuk menjelaskan proses berpikir penulis dalam praktik permainan viola serta penciptaan etude kontekstual. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan lima kelompok permasalahan utama teknik permainan, yaitu kompleksitas shifting, ketidakstabilan finger placement, ketidakstabilan string crossing, ketidaksinambungan legato, serta ketidaksinambungan bunyi pada double stop. Permasalahan tersebut berdampak pada ketidakstabilan intonasi, terganggunya kontinuitas bunyi, dan ketidakjelasan artikulasi. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, penelitian ini menghasilkan solusi berupa etude kontekstual yang diciptakan oleh penulis sebagai wujud pengetahuan praktis hasil analisis dan refleksi praktik permainan. Penerapan practice-based research diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi nyata dalam pendidikan musik, khususnya sebagai rujukan pedagogis dalam pembelajaran teknik permainan viola, serta menempatkan etude tidak hanya sebagai sarana latihan, namun juga sebagai sumber pengetahuan berbasis praktik. Kata Kunci: teknik permainan viola; pendidikan musik; practice-based research; etude kontekstual viola; béla bartók; viola concerto. ***** This study aims to identify and analyze technical performance problems in the first movement of Béla Bartók’s Viola Concerto (Tibor Serly edition) and to explain the process of creating contextual etudes as a solution to these challenges using a practice-based research method. The research data were collected through document and score study, reflective practice, practice documentation, and observations of other violists’ practice, complemented by reflective interviews. Data analysis was conducted in four stages: (1) document and score analysis to identify and analyze the forms of technical problems and to examine Carl Flesch’s pedagogical theory; (2) practice analysis using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns of technical problems; (3) artefact analysis following Nelson’s framework to examine the contextual etudes developed in response to the research problems; and (4) reflective analysis following Schön’s model of reflection to explain the author’s thinking processes in viola practice and in the creation of the contextual etudes. The findings identify five principal categories of technical problems, which are shifting complexity, instability in finger placement, instability in string crossing, inconsistent legato, and inconsistent sound production in double stops. These problems affect intonation stability, disrupt sound continuity, and reduce clarity of articulation. Based on these findings, the study develops contextual etudes composed by the author as a form of practical knowledge derived from analysis and reflective practice. The application of the practice-based research method is expected to make a tangible contribution to music education, particularly as a pedagogical reference for teaching viola performance techniques, and to position etudes not merely as a practice material but also as a source of practice-based knowledge.
