Abstract

Perfectionism is understood as the tendency to impose rigid and excessive standards, which over time can lead to psychological distress and depression. Through a contemporary art practice approach, this thesis examines how perfectionist experiences can be translated into artistic creation and how art can function as a space for reflection, self-appreciation, and social engagement. The creative process involves conceptual, visual, and operational exploration based on personal data, including the use of the Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) as a reference for tracing the author’s emotional journey. The outcome of this process is an installation and performance artwork titled A Laboratory of Imperfect Human Being, featuring eleven framed works representing emotional phases, certificates as a medium of self-appreciation, and performative interactions through discussions with visitors. The work positions imperfection as an integral part of becoming whole and emphasizes that healing and self-acceptance are not solely individual processes but are relational and collective. This thesis is expected to contribute to the discourse of contemporary art practices rooted in personal experience, particularly in relation to mental health issues, and to demonstrate how perfectionism can be transformed into a reflective and meaningful source of artistic creation.
