Abstract

Kata Kunci: desain karakter, mitos Nusantara, art book, budaya lokal, design thinking ***** This research stems from the phenomenon of declining interest among the younger generation in the myths of the Indonesian archipelago due to the dominance of foreign cultures through digital media. Myths play an important role in shaping cultural identity, moral values, and social solidarity within communities. Local mythical characters, which have traditionally been presented through oral storytelling and popular entertainment, have the potential to be reintroduced through more relevant media. This research aims to design cartoon-style characters from Nusantara myths in the form of a six-series art book representing the eight major islands of Indonesia, with a total of 28 mythical characters. This work is expected to become a creative medium for introducing the richness of Nusantara mythology, especially to the younger generation. The design thinking approach was used by involving literature studies, observations, questionnaires, focus group discussions, and expert interviews. The result is an art book that displays mythical characters with visual identities characteristic of their regions of origin through the use of illustrations, colours, and typography. Twenty-eight mythical creatures from various islands in Indonesia, namely Java, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua, were developed into six book series based on island regions. Through the application of expressive cartoon styles and the use of contrasting colours, each character is presented with a distinctive and easily recognisable visual identity without losing the cultural values of its region of origin. Keywords: character design, Indonesian mythology, art book, local culture, design thinking
