Abstract
***** This study aims to examine the forms, patterns, and discursive mechanisms of misogyny in Indonesia’s digital space using Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis and Forensic Linguistics. Online misogyny manifests not only through explicit hate speech but also through implicit expressions such as humor, gendered stereotypes, moral judgments, and subtle linguistic acts that degrade women. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method by analyzing 300 comments collected from TikTok, Instagram, and X that exhibit misogynistic elements. Data were obtained through online observation and digital documentation, then categorized into seven forms: sexual objectification, body shaming, clothing-based stigma, implicit verbal harassment, symbolic violence, reduction of women as sexual commodities, and character attacks with potential defamatory implications. Sara Mills’ framework was used to examine subject–object positioning and power relations within the discourse, while forensic linguistic analysis identified linguistic markers indicating possible defamation. The findings reveal that TikTok contains the highest proportion of misogynistic comments (53.3%), followed by Instagram (33.3%) and X (13.3%), each reflecting platform-specific discursive cultures. The analysis further shows that women are consistently positioned as passive objects, whereas commenters assume dominant subject positions that shape, control, and normalize patriarchal narratives. Several comments also contain defamatory elements that may harm women’s reputation and safety. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how misogyny is reproduced through language in digital environments and highlights the need for improved digital literacy, policy interventions, and community awareness to build a safer, more inclusive online space for women.
