Abstract
***** This study examines the development of Indonesian horror films between 2001 and 2017 as part of Indonesia's post-Reformation popular cultural history. This period begins with the release of Jelangkung (2001), which marked the revival of the national horror film industry, and concludes with the success of Pengabdi Setan (2017), which represented the emergence of a new era of Indonesian horror cinema characterized by stronger artistic quality. The objectives of this research are to explain the background of the revival of Indonesian horror films, analyze their development and characteristics during 2001–2012, and describe the shift in trends that led to the industry's resurgence during 2013–2017. This research employs the historical method consisting of four stages: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The sources include film archives, Indonesian film statistics, newspaper and magazine articles, academic journals, books, and other secondary sources related to the history of Indonesian cinema. The findings reveal that the success of Jelangkung revitalized the Indonesian horror film industry while introducing a more efficient digital production model. Between 2006 and 2012, horror film production increased significantly; however, the industry became increasingly dominated by commercial exploitation through horror-sex formulas, female sensuality, and repetitive storylines, resulting in declining narrative quality. This condition eventually caused audience fatigue and weakened the reputation of Indonesian horror films. Beginning in 2013, a gradual transformation emerged through the arrival of new filmmakers who emphasized storytelling, cinematography, artistic direction, and the exploration of local cultural traditions. This transformation culminated in 2017 with the success of Pengabdi Setan, demonstrating that Indonesian horror cinema could achieve both artistic excellence and commercial success while restoring public confidence in the national film industry.
