Abstract
***** This study aims to examine the effect of parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive) on the self-confidence of athletes with intellectual disabilities at Special Olympics Indonesia (SOIna) DKI Jakarta, both partially and simultaneously. This study used a non-experimental quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 150 SOIna DKI Jakarta athletes selected using a total sampling technique. Parenting style data were collected using the Parenting Style and Dimension Questionnaire-Short Form (PSDQ-SF), while athletes' self-confidence data were collected using the Coach-Rated Sport Confidence Scale, completed by coaches as proxy respondents. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results showed that the three parenting styles simultaneously had a significant effect on athletes' self-confidence (F = 22.157; sig. = 0.000), contributing 31.3%. Partially, authoritative parenting had a significant positive effect on athletes' self-confidence (t = 3.684; sig. = 0.000), while authoritarian (t = -2.521; sig. = 0.000) and permissive (t = -3.694; sig. = 0.000) parenting had significant negative effects. These findings indicate that the more parents apply authoritative parenting, the higher athletes' self-confidence becomes, whereas authoritarian and permissive parenting reduce athletes' self-confidence. The results support Baumrind's (1971) theory and emphasize the importance of authoritative parenting in supporting the psychological development of athletes with intellectual disabilities.
