Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji evolusi penampilan fisik Ariel dalam poster resmi The Little Mermaid selama tiga puluh empat tahun (1989–2023) untuk memahami bagaimana Disney mengonstruksi dan mendekonstruksi standar gender dan kecantikan. Dengan menggunakan analisis visual semiotika, penelitian ini mengaplikasikan Semiotika Visual dari Kress dan van Leeuwen untuk menguji metafungsi Representasional, Interaktif, dan Komposisional pada gambar, serta dipadukan dengan teori Representation dari Stuart Hall. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa pada poster-poster awal (1989, 2000, dan 2008), fitur Eurosentris Ariel dengan kulit putih porselen dan rambut merah lurus terus diulang dan ditata secara visual melalui pembingkaian dan penonjolan (salience) spesifik untuk membentuk bingkai regulasi yang kaku mengenai sosok putri ideal. Namun, poster tahun 2019 dan 2023 menandai pergeseran yang krusial. Poster live-action tahun 2023 menampilkan Ariel dengan warna kulit yang lebih gelap dan rambut keriting bertekstur, yang secara fundamental menantang representasi standar yang telah mapan. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa dengan mengubah indikator fisik spesifik tersebut sambil tetap mempertahankan tata letak visual konseptualnya, poster tahun 2023 melakukan sebuah dekonstruksi visual dengan praktik rezim representasi rasial dan "Othering". Tindakan visual ini secara efektif mendekonstruksi hegemoni Eurosentris yang telah bertahan selama tiga puluh empat tahun, membuktikan bahwa identitas seorang putri bukanlah karakteristik biologis yang mutlak, melainkan sebuah standar yang dikonstruksi secara sosial yang dapat terus berevolusi untuk merefleksikan realitas modern yang beragam dan inklusif. ***** This study investigates the evolution of Ariel's physical appearance in The Little Mermaid official posters spanning thirty-four years (1989–2023) to understand how Disney constructs and deconstructs beauty standards. Utilizing visual semiotic analysis, the research applies Kress and van Leeuwen's Visual Semiotics to examine the Representational, Interactive, and Compositional metafunctions of the images, using Stuart Hall's Theory of Representation. The analysis reveals that in the early posters (1989, 2000, and 2008), Ariel's Eurocentric features such as porcelain-fair skin and straight red hair were continuously repeated and visually staged through specific framing and salience to establish a highly rigid regulatory frame of the ideal princess. However, the 2019 and 2023 posters mark a critical shift. The 2023 live-action poster portrays Ariel with a darker skin tone and textured copper locs, fundamentally challenging the established representation of the standard. The findings demonstrate that by changing these specific physical indicators while maintaining the conceptual visual staging, the 2023 poster engages in a visual deconstruction of the racialized regime of representation and "Othering". This visual act effectively deconstructs the thirty-four-year Eurocentric hegemony, proving that a princess's identity is not a fixed biological characteristic, but a socially constructed standard that can continuously evolve to reflect a diverse and inclusive modern reality.
