Abstract

***** This undergraduate thesis analyses the representation and negotiation of American and British cultural identities in My Oxford Year (2025) through narrative, dialogue, character behaviour, and Oxford's institutional setting. Using Stuart Hall's Representation Theory, it examines how the film constructs these identities through narrative structure, character portrayal, dialogue, visual elements, and Oxford as an institutional setting. Homi K. Bhabha's concepts of cultural negotiation and hybridity are applied to trace the development of Anna's identity through in-betweenness, otherness, ambivalence, conflict, disruption, mimicry, cultural translation, and hybridity. Anna is portrayed as an American character with an Argentine mother and a Cuban émigré father, a background acknowledged in the discussion without becoming a separate focus of analysis. A qualitative descriptive method is used, with scenes, dialogues, and visual elements selected through purposive sampling and organized into cultural representation and cultural negotiation/hybridity. Findings show American identity is represented through Anna's career orientation, direct communication, and expressive participation, while British identity is represented through indirectness, emotional restraint, class-coded idiom, and a literary inheritance distributed across several characters. Oxford is represented as an elite space that legitimizes British cultural authority, positioning Anna's American identity as something that consistently requires explanation within that environment. These representational signs become the material for Anna's negotiation, which unfolds not as smooth adaptation but through ambivalence toward her undefined relationship with Jamie, her resistance to naming it as anything serious, disruption of her academic self-image after his tutorial feedback, and mimicry of British speech and social codes, before she eventually forms a hybrid identity by reinterpreting Oxford's own traditions in her own voice within Oxford's third space. This study concludes that cultural identity in the film is not fixed but continuously constructed through the interaction between representation and negotiation within cross-cultural encounters.
