Abstract
**** This study aimed to examine the effects of the ten dimensions of conformity to masculine norms (Winning, Emotional Control, Risk Taking, Violence, Playboy, Self-Reliance, Primacy of Work, Power Over Women, Heterosexual Self-Presentation, and Pursuit of Status) on self-compassion among male commercial gym members. A quantitative approach with multiple linear regression analysis was employed. Conformity to masculine norms was measured using the Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory-30 (CMNI-30; Levant et al., 2020), while self-compassion was assessed using the Indonesian Self-Compassion Scale adapted by Sugianto et al., (2020). A total of 161 men aged 18–43 years who exercised at commercial gyms at least twice a week and had maintained membership for a minimum of three months were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling. The results indicated that the ten dimensions of conformity to masculine norms collectively had a significant effect on self-compassion (F = 4.863, p < .001, R² = .245). At the dimensional level, only Violence (B = −0.074, p = .018) and Playboy (B = −0.089, p = .004) showed significant negative effects on self-compassion. Additional analyses revealed that these effects were significant only among participants who had been gym members for more than one year. These findings suggest that prolonged exposure to the gym environment may reinforce masculine norms that hinder the development of self-compassion.
