Abstract
***** The street children phenomenon in Manggarai, South Jakarta, represents a form of social vulnerability caused by prolonged household economic pressure. This study aims to examine the lives of street children and the factors that push them onto the streets through the perspective of Household Financial Strain, as developed by Voydanoff, combined with the Family Stress Model proposed by Conger and Elder. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study method, involving seven primary participants aged 11–18 years and three secondary participants selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results indicate that children's involvement in street activities is not a form of deviance or forced exploitation, but rather a pattern of structural adaptation and conscious initiative (emotional parentification) to save their families from the threat of starvation. This condition is triggered by an accumulation of objective strain (income collapse), subjective strain (psychological burden and premature maturity), and family strain in the form of relational dysfunction and domestic violence. Furthermore, the absence of basic assets, family demographic vulnerability, and layered daily debt burdens lock underprivileged families into a cycle of structural poverty, forcing children to take on the role of breadwinner to sustain their families' survival.
